Most times, we are faced with challenges such as slow speed, intermittent freezing, and degraded performance. As with most computer challenges, there are many possibilities. From hardware problems of memory, hard disk and peripheral issues; to software issues such as viruses, antiviruses, and device drivers, the possibilities are endless.

I shall be going through how I changed the RAM (and HDD if you want to do the same) of the HP 4515s. I believe this should also apply to the HP Probook 45xx series

The Challenge

“My laptop is too slow”, a client complained one day. “It freezes intermittently, and work gets frustrating most times”, he lamented.

The Approach

I had to, before doing any other troubleshooting, identify the system properties. Just clicking on Start>>Right click on Computer>>Properties returned this result

Windows edition

Windows 7 Ultimate

System

Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard

Model: HP Probook 4515s

Installed memory (RAM): 1GB

RAM of just 1GB? On an operating system like Windows 7?

According to Microsoft’s engineers, the minimum requirement for installing Windows 7 on any PC is 1GB RAM, but with the memory-hungry software of the jet age today, just 1GB would never be enough for optimum performance. Using just 1GB, automatically meant there would be almost no Random Access Memory space for software programs (antivirus and other installed programs) to function.

WE FOUND THE BAD GUY

I still checked background processes for any suspicious and/or memory consuming process, just to be double sure. (This you can do by simply running taskmgr.exe to invoke Windows Task Manager)

The Action Plan

Without much ado, I set to work on performing a RAM upgrade. Adding an extra 2GB RAM sounded perfect. Getting one in Computer Village, Lagos (Computer Village was and still is the most reliable source of computers, and accessories in Lagos.. maybe in Nigeria too).

To ensure you get the correct RAM type, you need to know the various types of RAM.

RAM Types

There a many types of RAM, ranging from the 30-pin SIMM (Single InLine Memory Module) to the 240-pin DIMM (Dual InLine Memory Module), and details of these can be found on the internet. What I am mostly interested in is how to differentiate one from the other.

72-pin SIMM

184-pin RAMBUS RDRAM RIMM

200-pin DDR2 SODIMM

240-pin DDR2 DIMM

168-pin SDRAM DIMM

After a little internet search on the type of RAM compatible with the 4515s, I could determine exactly what to purchase in the stores. (The DDR3 RAM is not compatible with laptops that use DDR2 RAM!)

All I had to do was insert the RAM upgrade into the computer (Details on how to do that can be found here) and I was good to go
