Here’s a nice and easy way to save/restrict data usage using the Firewall feature of Avast Mobile Security.

The dependence on internet connectivity of our smartphones and apps means that our devices are now more data hungry than ever. Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to ever get better, especially with many apps now integrating cloud services and always-online functionality. Android smartphones are the most data hungry, according to new statistics from Nielsen Co., blowing past the iPhone and other smartphones. But it’s still not clear why that is and whether or not this indicates more usage on the part of Android users or something inherent in the platform that lends itself to more data use.

Blackberry smartphones do pretty well in data saving, but their Android counterparts do not do so well. Just connecting to the internet to quickly post that status update could cost you a sizeable amount of data (mostly because of background applications), but if you don’t want this inconvenience, you could use the Firewall feature of Avast Mobile Security to restrict the apps that can access the internet.

How to save mobile data consumption using Avast Mobile Security Firewall

  • Install Avast Mobile Security

Avast Mobile Security
  • Go to Firewall, Enable it
Enable Firewall
Avast Enable Firewall

The list of applications are shown (as in the picture).

  • Ensure that “Current firewall mode” is set to “Allow selected (Whitelist mode)”

Choose the connection you want the firewall to allow

That’s all! Your have successfully restricted data usage to specific applications (In my case, Opera Mini Beta can only access 3G networks, and all other apps can access WiFi).
