Dear Blogger,

We agree that the web is now accessible to anyone, and that means that sometimes your hard earned research could be copied off and pasted to another site without either permission or referral/link-back. This could get really annoying, especially if you did all the hard work, carried out all the research, only to find your work pasted on every Tom Dick and Harry website, without your permission, even though you have a Copyright notice on your website footer.

Well, here’s how to make sure you at least get your copied content linked back to your site by displaying a “Read More” or a “Copyrighted to” at the bottom of posts content copied from your website.

How to add a “Read More” to posts copied from your blog, or a “Copyrighted to.. ” if you please

There are two ways do this. The first doesn’t need that much coding knowledge (I don’t know code myself), just know how to edit your functions.php file or your headers.php. You can edit the headers.php file with the help of a plugin called Headers and Footers.

<script type="text/javascript">
function addLink() {
var body_element = document.getElementsByTagName('body')[0];
var selection;
selection = window.getSelection();
var pagelink = "<br /><br /> Read more at: <a href='"+document.location.href+"'>"+document.location.href+"</a><br />Copyright &copy; ECHO_Blog"; // change this to anything you want
var copytext = selection + pagelink;
var newdiv = document.createElement('div');
newdiv.innerHTML = copytext;
window.setTimeout(function() {
document.oncopy = addLink;

Copy this code to either your functions.php or your header. It will automatically load the script when a visits the page ready to insert the copyright link.

The other way is to use a free service offered by analytics company Tynt. All you have to do is sign up a free account at tynt.com, setup your profile, and it should be active automatically. The only downside here is that since the script loads from tynt external servers, it may affect the speed of your site.

Final words

With these few tips, even though you may not be able to block copy and paste (for the sake of a better user experience) you can leverage on your visitors actions to improve your SEO.
