If you bought music between 2003 and 2009, you certainly have heard of, and experienced DRM protection in music. And you might have hated DRM too.

Now that DRM has finally being scrapped, those songs with DRM protection haven’t magically changed, and they are still pretty annoying. But here’s how to get non-DRM versions of your DRM protected music on iTunes.

How to get non-DRM version of DRM protected music

Make sure “Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases” is checked.

You can do this by clicking on Preferences in iTunes menu and click on the Store tab.

Make sure those protected songs are ready for download.

You can do this by clicking on the Cloud icon in the list view of your music. You should see a list of music that’s ready to be downloaded with a cloud icon and an arrow pointed down (meaning download).

Now let’s delete those DRM protected songs.

You can find all your DRM protected music in iTunes by going to the List view and clicking on “Kind” to order your music by the type of file it is. Should you not see the “Kind” option, click on “View” and select “Show View Options” in the Menu bar. Under file, check “Kind.” Now scroll down to “Protected AAC audio file.” Once you’ve located the DRM protected files, delete them (remember we can download them back from iTunes, right?)

Download the songs without DRM protection

Yes you got that right. You can now download the songs without DRM protection by simply clicking the download icon for each song.

Mission accomplished…

Now ECHO IT!
