Introduction – My “This theme is broken” story

Unfortunately, I don’t like to write about blogging tips, but this challenge I faced today gave me a little trouble and I think you should be in the know, in case you’re stuck in same spot

I set up a new website at http://androidphoneappreviews.com (where I review the best of Android apps both paid and free) and I wanted to use the Eleven40 Pro theme based on Genesis Framework for WordPress. However, after installing Genesis 2.0.1 and the child theme, I got an error on my Themes page on my admin panel

This theme is broken. The parent theme is missing. Please install the “Genesis” parent theme

After a lot of troubleshooting, I came up with a fix and I would like to share it with you.

The Approach

I noticed that the parent theme, Genesis, was missing, some other contributors on wordpress.org forums suggested I edit this line in the style.css of the child theme in Theme Editor

Template: Genesis

I changed it based on the case of the Genesis (note that it is a capital G from the error message)

Still no result.

The Solution

I logged in to the control panel of my website. It is usually at cpanel.yourwebsite.com (or whatever your host assigns to you). Then I navigated to the wp-content/themes folder, and instead of me seeing a folder called Genesis, I saw a folder called genesis-2.0.1.

Oops. I remember that I renamed the zip file from genesis.zip to genesis-2.0.1.zip before uploading it to my website. Silly me!

All I did was rename the folder correctly (to Genesis) and refreshed my Themes Page on the Admin panel of my website, and after close to half an hour of troubleshooting, all my problems magically went away.

Praise God!
