This post is a quick summary of my latest experience with spam, and with it you should learn a few methods of how to detect spam emails

This morning I got an interesting email that looked like it was from QuickTeller

Dear Valued Customer,

There was an issue with your last ATM withdrawal, you are hereby advised to automatically re-activate your ATM debit card to avoid your bank account from being compromised.

CLICK HERE RE-ACTIVATE YOUR DEBIT/ATM  DOWNLOAD THE ATTACHED RE-ACTIVATION FORM, FILL  TO COMPLETE YOUR UPGRADE.

NOTE: Failure to do this will lead to suspension of your Debit Card.

Yours sincerely,

The Bait

If I were not a QuickTeller customer, I would have immediately flagged this as spam, but since I currently use quickteller (with this email), it initially come to mind that it was spam. To further convince me that it might not have been spam, was that I frequently use QuickTeller for online transactions, so it was possible that my “last ATM withdrawal” may have “had an issue” as the mail said.

The Escape

However, taking a second look at the mail, I discovered a few pitfalls in its integrity (see picture)

1. The sender domain was mail.com via another domain (most likely a mass mailer –  wildblue.net).

2. It was sent to quickteller.al instead of my email directly

How to detect spam mails

Every email that tries to mask the original sender IS SPAM, ant thus should be deleted immediately (and/or reported to anti-spam/Google/your financial institution). That way, you can save others from falling into the ditch you avoided.

Lessons learnt

The main lessons to be taken away from my experience are

Always TAKE A SECOND LOOK

No matter how legitimate the email is, ALWAYS TAKE A SECOND LOOK. It only takes a few seconds to verify the authenticity of that email before clicking the attachment, and that could save you lots of money

BE SMART

The malicious guys are getting smarter, so you have to find means to outsmart them in their game. Stay smart. If you are unsure of anything, as a search engine. Google is the King Solomon of our time, no doubt. He can answer your questions, if you ask correctly.
