A do-it-yourself test-kit has been developed by researchers at Harvard Medical School, where you can use a smartphone to check your fertility level.

It’s called a smartphone-based semen analyser, and it is used to test for male fertility. The system uses a smartphone app with a 3D-printed optical attachment to record a video of sperm cells. Algorithms in the app then analyse the video to capture information about the sperm movement and concentration. Results have so far been 97 percent accurate compared to clinical testing methods.

With testing methods such as this, men may no longer have need to see a doctor for fertility testing. It could also prove useful for men in developing countries and cannot afford laboratory testing.

The kit is currently commercially available and costs about $50 to make, and does not require internet access.
